The regular present tense endings

Present tense endings with machen as the example
PersonEndingmachen
ich-emache
du-stmachst
er / sie / es-tmacht
wir-enmachen
ihr-tmacht
sie / Sie-enmachen

Sie with a capital S is the formal “you”, for one person or several. It always takes the same form as sie (they).

Sein, haben and werden

The three most common verbs are irregular and worth learning first. Sein and haben also build the perfect tense, and werden builds the future and the passive.

  • sein to be

    sie / Siesind

Past: er war · Perfect: er ist gewesen

  • haben to have

    Present tense of haben
    ichhabe
    duhast
    er / sie / eshat
    wirhaben

Regular verbs

Most verbs take the stem (the infinitive without -en) and add -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en. Stems ending in -t or -d add an extra e so the ending can be heard: du arbeitest, er arbeitet.

  • machen to do, to make

    Present tense of machen
    ichmache
    dumachst
    er / sie / esmacht
    wirmachen
    ihrmacht
    sie / Siemachen

Past: er machte · Perfect: er hat gemacht

  • arbeiten to work

    Present tense of arbeiten
    icharbeite
    duarbeitest
    er / sie / esarbeitet
    wirarbeiten
    ihrarbeitet
    sie / Siearbeiten

Past: er arbeitete · Perfect: er hat gearbeitet

  • gehen to go, to walk

    Present tense of gehen
    ichgehe
    dugehst
    er / sie / esgeht
    wirgehen
    ihrgeht
    sie / Siegehen

Past: er ging · Perfect: er ist gegangen

Regular in the present, irregular in the past.

Stem-changing verbs

Some strong verbs change their vowel, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms: a becomes ä, e becomes i or ie. Everything else stays regular.

  • fahren to drive, to travel

    Present tense of fahren
    ichfahre
    dufährst
    er / sie / esfährt
    wirfahren
    ihrfahrt
    sie / Siefahren

Past: er fuhr · Perfect: er ist gefahren

a → ä. With an object (driving a car) the perfect uses haben: Ich habe das Auto gefahren.

  • sprechen to speak

    Present tense of sprechen
    ichspreche
    dusprichst
    er / sie / esspricht
    wirsprechen
    ihrsprecht

Past: er sprach · Perfect: er hat gesprochen

e → i, like essen (du isst) and geben (du gibst).

  • lesen to read

    Present tense of lesen
    ichlese
    duliest
    er / sie / esliest
    wirlesen
    ihrlest
    sie / Sielesen

Past: er las · Perfect: er hat gelesen

e → ie, like sehen (du siehst).

Questions

How do you conjugate a regular German verb?

Take the infinitive, remove -en to get the stem, and add the ending for the person: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en. Machen becomes ich mache, du machst, er macht, wir machen, ihr macht, sie machen.

What is the conjugation of sein?

ich bin, du bist, er/sie/es ist, wir sind, ihr seid, sie/Sie sind. Its past is war and its perfect is ist gewesen.

What is the conjugation of haben?

ich habe, du hast, er/sie/es hat, wir haben, ihr habt, sie/Sie haben. Its past is hatte and its perfect is hat gehabt.

When do you use sein or haben in the German perfect tense?

Most verbs use haben. Verbs of movement from one place to another (gehen, fahren, kommen) and of a change of state (werden, sterben, aufwachen) use sein, as do sein and bleiben themselves.

Why is it du heißt and not du heißst?

When the stem ends in an s sound (-s, -ß, -z, -x), the du form only adds -t: du heißt, du tanzt, du liest.
