Lesson 45 of 69 · A2, Unit 5: Grammar milestones
The perfect with sein
Some verbs build the perfect with sein instead of haben: verbs of movement from A to B (gehen, fahren, fliegen, kommen) and of change of state (aufstehen, einschlafen, sterben, werden). Plus two exceptions to learn by heart: sein and bleiben.
Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren. Wir sind um sechs aufgestanden. Er ist zu Hause geblieben. The participle still goes to the end.
By the end you can:
- recognise verbs that take sein in the perfect
- form the perfect of common movement verbs
- use war and bin gewesen correctly
