Lesson 56 of 69 · B1, Unit 2: Complex sentences
Subordinate clauses
Subordinating conjunctions introduce a clause that can't stand alone, and they send the conjugated verb to the very end of that clause: Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Berlin arbeite.
If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb — the whole subordinate clause counts as position one: Weil ich in Berlin arbeite, lerne ich Deutsch.
By the end you can:
- send the verb to the end after weil, dass, wenn, ob, and obwohl
- start a sentence with a subordinate clause and invert the main clause
- tell wenn, als, and ob apart
