Lesson 20 of 69 · A1, Unit 5: Out and about
At the café
Kaffee und Kuchen — coffee and cake in the mid-afternoon — is a German institution. In a café you usually seat yourself, and a server comes to you; you pay at the table at the end.
When the bill comes, the server will ask Zusammen oder getrennt? — together or separately? Splitting the bill item by item is completely normal in Germany.
By the end you can:
- order drinks and food politely
- ask for the bill and choose to pay together or separately
- use ich hätte gern and ich nehme
