Lesson 17 of 69 · A1, Unit 5: Out and about

Colours and describing things

After sein, an adjective takes no ending at all: Das Auto ist rot. Die Tasche ist neu. That makes describing things easy from day one.

In front of a noun, adjectives do take endings — ein rotes Auto — which you'll learn in A2. For now, use the 'X ist Y' pattern and you'll always be right.

By the end you can:

  • name the common colours
  • describe things with adjectives after sein
  • use sehr, ziemlich, and zu to strengthen or soften a description
