Lesson 18 of 69 · A1, Unit 5: Out and about

Getting around

German cities have excellent public transport — U-Bahn (underground), S-Bahn (suburban rail), Straßenbahn (tram), and Bus. Tickets are usually checked at random rather than at a barrier, so buy one before you ride — and if it's a paper ticket that needs stamping, validate it (entwerten) in the machine on the platform or on board.

To ask the way, start with Entschuldigung and then Wo ist ...? or Wie komme ich zum / zur ...?

By the end you can:

  • ask where something is and how to get there
  • understand basic directions: left, right, straight on
  • buy a ticket and ask about trains and buses
