Lesson 33 of 69 · A2, Unit 2: The cases

Prepositions: accusative or dative?

Some German prepositions always put the following noun in the accusative: durch, für, gegen, ohne, um — für dich, durch den Park. Others always take the dative: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu — mit dem Bus, nach der Arbeit. (Two-way prepositions like in and auf, which switch case, have their own lesson.)

Several of these merge with the article in everyday German: zu dem → zum, zu der → zur, bei dem → beim, von dem → vom. Ich gehe zum Arzt. Sie fährt zur Arbeit.

By the end you can:

  • use the accusative after durch, für, gegen, ohne, um
  • use the dative after aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu
  • use the contractions zum, zur, beim and vom
