Lesson 34 of 69 · A2, Unit 2: The cases
Ich, mich, mir: pronouns in every case
Like articles, German pronouns change with their role: ich (subject) becomes mich as a direct object and mir as an indirect object — Ich sehe dich. Kannst du mir helfen? You've met some already; this lesson puts the whole table together.
A handful of very common verbs take a dative object even though English uses a plain object: helfen, danken, gefallen, gehören, antworten. So it's Ich helfe dir, not Ich helfe dich.
By the end you can:
- use the accusative and dative forms of every personal pronoun
- use the dative after helfen, danken, gefallen and gehören
- order two pronouns correctly: Er gibt es mir
