Lesson 22 of 69 · A1, Unit 5: Out and about

Commands: Komm! Kommen Sie! Kommt!

German has three command forms, one for each 'you'. For du, use the verb stem without du and usually without -st: Komm! Mach! Warte! For ihr, use the normal ihr form without ihr: Kommt! Macht! For Sie, keep Sie but put the verb first: Kommen Sie!

Verbs that change e to i or ie in the du form keep that change in the command — geben → Gib!, nehmen → Nimm!, lesen → Lies! — but verbs that change a to ä don't: fahren → Fahr!, schlafen → Schlaf! Add bitte or mal to soften any command.

By the end you can:

  • give instructions with the du, ihr and Sie forms
  • handle the e→i verbs (Gib! Nimm! Lies!) and sein (Sei! Seid! Seien Sie!)
  • soften a command with bitte and mal
