Lesson 48 of 69 · A2, Unit 5: Grammar milestones

Comparing things

German comparatives add -er, like English: klein → kleiner, schnell → schneller. Short adjectives often add an umlaut: alt → älter, groß → größer, jung → jünger. 'Than' is als: Berlin ist größer als München.

The superlative is am ...sten after a verb (Er läuft am schnellsten) and der/die/das ...ste before a noun (der schnellste Läufer). 'As ... as' is so ... wie: Er ist so groß wie ich.

By the end you can:

  • form comparatives and superlatives
  • use als and so ... wie
  • use the irregular forms of gut, viel, gern, and hoch
