Lesson 67 of 69 · B1, Unit 4: Practice and stories
Formal German
Formal written German has fixed formulas, and getting them right matters. Letters and emails start with Sehr geehrte Frau ... / Sehr geehrter Herr ... and end with Mit freundlichen Grüßen. Less formal but still professional: Liebe Frau ... and Viele Grüße.
Dealing with Behörden (authorities) — registering your address (Anmeldung), the tax office, the Ausländerbehörde — brings its own vocabulary. This lesson gives you the key words and phrases.
By the end you can:
- open and close a formal email or letter correctly
- make a formal request in writing or on the phone
- understand common words from official letters and forms
