Lesson 68 of 69 · B1, Unit 4: Practice and stories
Idioms and sayings
German idioms are wonderfully concrete, and many involve food or animals. Das ist mir Wurst (that's sausage to me) means 'I don't care'. Schwein haben (to have pig) means 'to be lucky'.
Use them sparingly and in the right register — they add colour to conversation but sound odd in formal writing.
By the end you can:
- understand common German idioms when you hear them
- use a few everyday sayings naturally
- recognise the literal image behind each expression
