Lesson 36 of 69 · A2, Unit 3: Work, learning, and free time
School and education
Children in Germany start Grundschule (primary school) at six and, after four years (six in Berlin and Brandenburg), move to a Gymnasium (academic track, leading to the Abitur), a Realschule, or a Gesamtschule, depending on the state. Education is run by the 16 Bundesländer, so details vary.
studieren means to study at university only. For school, or for studying for a test, use lernen: Ich lerne für die Prüfung.
By the end you can:
- name school subjects and places of study
- tell studieren and lernen apart
- talk about exams, courses, and qualifications
